Can Ozone Gas Remove Formaldehyde?

According to Wikipedia, formaldehyde is a naturally occurring organic compound. The pure compound is a pungent-smelling colourless gas that polymerises spontaneously into paraformaldehyde, hence it is stored as an aqueous solution.

The Natural Cancer Institute states that formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical that is used in building materials and to produce many household products. It is used in pressed-wood products, such as particleboard, plywood, and fiberboard; glues and adhesives; permanent-press fabrics; paper product coatings and certain insulation materials. In addition, formaldehyde is commonly used as an industrial fungicide, germicide and disinfectant, as a preservative in mortuaries and medical laboratories. Formaldehyde also occurs naturally in the environment. It is produced in small amounts by most living organisms as part of normal metabolic processes.

Formaldehyde is obviously toxic which can cause discomfort when there is a trace amount of it in the air, however in high concentrations it can even cause death. Formaldehyde is classified as a “carcinogen” by the World Health Organization. According to the No. 153 published by the World Health Organization on June 15, 2004: confirmed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), formaldehyde can cause cancer in humans. Formaldehyde has been upgraded from a “carcinogenic” to a “carcinogen.”

Ozone (O3) is a reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms. It is both a natural and a man-made product occurring in the Earth’s upper and lower atmosphere.  Depending on where it is in the atmosphere, ozone affects life in different ways. Ozone gas produces strong oxidation in an instant, and it is used for sterilization, disinfection and detoxification. It has strong killing power against bacteria, germs, fungi, mold spores, viruses, etc. It can effectively remove various bacteria, viruses, odors and toxic gases including formaldehyde, which are released by many new household products. In other words, ozone gas can oxidize formaldehyde under standard conditions.
